small site update

i updated the layout a bit. i found the little problem that was causing ie to display the site differently than firefox - the calendar in the sidebar was spreading out too far. this allowed me to change the top graphic to one that is thinner and spreads across the entire top of the site for an exact pixel length. i changed the background color from a pale yellow to a light blue and i finally added a navigation bar that i've been wanting to design for a long time. i did it all with hand-coded css.

one neat thing about the navigation bar is that i used accesskeys so you can hit alt+1 for the first button, alt+2 for the second button, and so forth. pretty cool. i also copied the navigation bar to all the archive templates so every archive page should have the same graphic and navigation bar at the top.

also, as discussed the other day, i turned the writings thing into a blog post with a category of writings and the button at the top links to that category archive. same thing with the videos except those were already posts. putting that stuff at the top allowed me to remove that section from the left sidebar which i then reorganized a bit by breaking it down into more labels.
