"guy code"

i've occasionally thought about posting this and i don't have it set in stone somewhere so here is just as good a place as any.

rule #1: never talk to other guys in the bathroom. the only possible exception is maybe while you're both washing your hands - if you wash your hands.

rule #2a: never take a urinal adjacent to someone else if there is an available urinal that is not adjacent to anyone.

rule #2b: when encountering a set of three empty urinals, never take the middle one since that would eliminate someone else's ability to use a urinal while adhering to rule #2a.

if i ever think of more rules, i'll add them, but these are the main, important ones.

another week

gee whiz another week went by. i think i can definitively say that (for me and most people) a person's quantitative blogging output is indirectly proportional to the level of busy-ness and stress in their work / school / family life. i was going strong in january when i didn't have class and that bled over to february. now class and work is crazy and i only put up 1-2 posts a week. for some people the opposite is true and blogging is their escape. maybe i can be more intentional about keeping you filled in. good news, i have all the 2005/2006 pics sifted through and ready to post... sometime.

quote for the day

this would've been more appropriate on november 1st right after the world series, but here goes:
"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
Rogers Hornsby

GO NATS!!!

article published

as you probably recall, i occasionally write for nationals farm authority, but i mainly keep the big board up to date with all the changes in the organization. i wrote an article solely about the statistics of perfecting the order of the washington nationals' starting lineup, but since it was solely about the major league club, i asked a compadre from the natosphere (nationals blogosphere) to host the article and he happily obliged. go check it out please!!

web stats and a little wheezer

i just found some web statistics and i'll tell ya what - they'll make you want to keep posting regularly! i had done pretty good this year and then this month i got a bit upset about school, a bit stressed with work, and a bit occupied with jake being sick.

on wednesday evening, jake had started getting his cough back and thursday afternoon, preschool had to call me to come get him for the first time. he had a 102 fever so we set up a dr. appt. that afternoon and they prescribed 6 (!!!) medicines for him! two were breathing treatments, two were allergy prevention meds since allergies here are apparently among the worst in the country, one was a stronger round of amoxycilin to fight off the possibility of pneumonia, and the last one was a disgusting tasting steroid (take jake's word on it) for the stress on his lung passages from the expanding/despanding (?) involved with breathing troubles. he took most of the meds thursday night and then we got to the steroid which caused him to gag and throw up (in our bed yay) and consequently scared him from taking any medicines for 2-3 days. needless to say it was a weekend of bartering barney, elmo, and bob the builder for taking medicine and sitting through breathing treatments. he's feeling better, but still wheezing. poor guy.

update

we're all healthy now, but it's been a hectic time at work recently. i finally realized that my job is more about projects and design than network security firefighting. in that vein, i've been embroiled in configuring new mail servers lately and it's a bit more challenging than keeping computers protected from the outside and performing routine maintenance on servers.

i had an on-campus class on medical ethics this past saturday. it was actually really interesting. we're talking about death, euthanasia, dying with dignity, and things of that nature. the second half is next saturday: 03/25.

jake had 2 year old pictures the weekend before last and they turned out great. contact me if you haven't seen them yet.

i'm looking forward to hopefully just hanging out this weekend. we don't have much planned and i shouldn't need to start on the next week's homework until sunday afternoon. i'm already ready for the semester to be over. shoot i'm ready for it to all be over and done.

strep v. 2.0

well, i finally finished that last post and got it up. lindsay woke up with a sore throat on sunday and after church i looked at it again and the ugly spots were back. we all went to the clinic, waited for 2.5 hours, all got swabbed, and all had strep throat - again. once again, lindsay is the sickest and the poor thing is getting worse before the meds make her better. me and jake went back to work and preschool, respectively. i haven't had much of any sore throat pain, but i was contagious yesterday and i just feel rundown and have a headache today. lindsay hopes to be back at work tmrw, but from the way she sounds on the phone, i don't know if that's going to happen.

friends

more new friends are always a good thing when you still don't have many close ones in a new area. kelly and jeff moved into the area at the beginning of the year for jeff to begin the counseling program and for kelly to begin a new job in my office. lindsay fixed a salad and a chicken and cream of mushroom dish and she helped me make this yummy pasta. they recently found out that kelly is pg so we talked about baby stuff for a chunk of the evening. it was a good time and we really enjoyed their company. jake ate well at dinner, played pretty well the rest of the evening, and we all look forward to another evening together.

ash wednesday

if you're unfamiliar, unsure, curious, or fine with (but maybe don't care to practice) ash wednesday, check out this friend of a friend. it's more of an explanation than an attempt at a compelling argument, but it's good all around (make sure to also follow the link on his site).

i just got out of ash wednesday chapel and it was a good time. the preacher's sermon was a master class in preaching (or speaking for that matter), but of course it helps that he's been a master at that for about 40 years or so. (note to self: take preaching with dr. kalas).

i think i may have only donned the ashes one other time in my life (in college, via the wesley foundation). my denominational background doesn't really make it a point to focus on the liturgical practices that have been a part of the Church for centuries, but they don't oppose them or anything. i love them and it makes me feel a part of worldwide community of christians.
