a week rolls by...

oops. well, i hope everyone had a blessed holy week and a happy easter. we got some good family pictures over the weekend and pretty much just hung out the rest of the time.

lindsay was writing an e.mail to someone who had asked for the address of this site and told them that i "pretty much just talk about baseball now - boring!" so i'm gonna leave that to the side for a while. opening day has come and gone and just know that i'm enjoying the season (no matter their record...)

this is a crazy busy week for us. i had a final exam review yesterday, homework due today, a short paper to write between tonight and tmrw nite, a final exam on thursday, and then i'm flying down to orlando friday morning (and back saturday morning) for the second half of that class. ok, i'm busy, but add this on top: lindsay has thursday off because her work has a big training thing pretty much all of friday and saturday. wait! we have a kid! what's he gonna do during all this time? well, lindsay has to spend part of her off day meeting her parents in corbin, ky so that jake can stay with them for a couple of nights. we're supposed to go down saturday night and stay over to pick him up, but we just found out that some of our closest friends (from knoxville actually) will actually be visiting lexington for the weekend. we figure we'll just get to knoxvill really late.

anywho - have a great week!

quick trip to knoxville

we trucked down to knoxville saturday morning and took jake to his first easter egg hunt. the event was at my mother-in-law's work and we would've gone on down on friday evening, but we've had some really bad storms in the area. those same storms also turned the "hunt" into "grab a bag with eggs in it". i loved the part where the eggs for even kids 2 and under had tootsie rolls, gum, jolly ranchers, and laffy taffy. [/sarcasm] but seriously, the event was well run and had hot dogs (a kid favorite), face painting, an easter bunny, cookie decorating, and even a huge puppet show. it was a really fun time.

saturday evening, we just hung out and watched a couple of movies at the house. it's nice to relax with family. after church and lunch on sunday, we began our ~3 hour drive home around 2pm which "just happened" to coincide with the beginning of the nats game. i wanted to try to keep score while driving, but i preferred to stay alive.

work is going really well the past couple of work days as i'm nearing the end of a huge project that will hopefully really help the campus out.

the nats lost a close one today in 12 innings. for some reason (as a friend also noted (next to last paragraph)), the final innings when we were tied just seemed like we were waiting to lose. 3-4 sure would've been a lot better than 2-5 (especially with patterson pitching today), but hopefully our (short) homestand will be a bit of a respite for our road warriors. go nats!

basebrawl

what an exciting first series. i'd say the mets won the series 2-1 over the nats, but really the umps won 2-1. on opening day, mets catcher paul lo duca got away with dropping the ball while tagging alfonso soriano out at the plate. he hid it well just like any other catcher would've and the nats lost 3-2. on wednesday, the mets started a minor leaguer who no hit the nats thru 5 innings. the dam finally broke in the 6th when nick johnson hit a three run homer to get the nats within striking distance at 4-3. in the bottom of the 9th, the nats' rookie sensation ryan 'dutch' zimmerman hit a full-count game tying hr off of billy wagner - yes, that billy wagner. when the game went to extras, the mets had already used 3 of their best relievers so the nats scored 5 runs in the 10th to win 9-5.

then came last night's game. the first game for pedro at shea. pedro has thrown a total of 7 live innings in 2006 and it showed as he walked 5 batters and hit 4 batters. tempers flared, bases cleared, and when the nats tried to retaliate for the 4 hbp's - and 6 overall in the series - they were the ones who got ejected. the umps came into play again in this game (well, besides allowing waaay too many hbp's to happen) in the 4th inning when there was a runner on 1st and 2nd and the mets batter hit a grounder that actually went directly off our pitcher's toe and high into the air and was caught by dutch. all the runners had incorrectly advanced and it should've been a triple play, but the umps thought the ball just had to have hit the ground first - even though it didn't. so the bases were loaded and a few batters later all three had scored. if you take the runs away, the mets would've still won 7-5, but can you tell me the game wouldn't have been played differently and the relievers used differently if the nats were up 5-2 in the bottom of the 5th?

ok, i know you don't come here for baseball recaps and i know i don't intend for this place to turn into a baseball blog, but this is how i've spent my spring break week and it's very fun to have games on every night again. i made a scorebook for the season yesterday (got it bound at kinko's) and i've been having fun keeping score.

oh, and we're heading down to knoxville for the weekend (saturday morning instead of tonight due to impending thunderstorms) to see the family. jake will be going on his first easter egg hunt while we're there. have a blessed palm sunday!

another day off

well, we lost to the mets 3-2 in a close and exciting game. though the miscues could inspire anger, i'll allow the good pitching and one-run loss to inspire hope for the rest of the season. it's too early to be angry when it's so exciting to just have baseball back for real.

the get-together was fun with my pastor reid, my friend peter, and his friend john all showing up around 1pm for the nats game. my friend kasey had to work and showed up around 4pm for his dodgers' game. we had pizza and cheesesticks from papa johns (including "the kong" an extra large pizza with pepperoni and italian sausage - mmmm...), a bunch of ale 8-1 to drink, and grilled brats around the 7th inning. a great day all around.

lindsay's half day is today and i'll be meeting her for lunch. it's not too often that we get to eat alone. i had to run some errands and make some calls this morning and now i'm watching the 5th disc of that baseball documentary (1930's). there is not a nats game today, but i'm eagerly anticipating watching john patterson pitch tomorrow night.

opening day

yay!!! baseball is officially back!! i've got a few friends coming over for pizza and brats today (spring break is this week and staff (me) is off today and tomorrow) to watch the nats open the season at the mets. we might not end up with as many as wins as last year, but this season is shaping up to be a fun and interesting one.
