with the multiplicity of social networking options, this just feels outdated ...
i'd like to revamp it at some point as a portal to the other places i talk (see the top lefthand box for now ha! also outdated though!). nowadays, if i have a brief thought (140 characters or less, of course) i simultaneously post it to to facebook and twitter with an iphone app. if i want a picture with it, that app is instagram. if i just want a location with it (church, work, home, etc.), i use foursquare. this week, i've had the need / desire to post some longer-winded thoughts so i set up a tumblr site, but I won't be surprised if that goes dark too.

why? well, life is going pretty good, but insanely busy with an awesome wife & two kids, pastoring a small church, working full time an hour away back at lexmark, one weekend per month as an army national guard chaplain, and occasionally teaching with indiana wesleyan university. i love the things i'm doing, but i have a feeling God is going to help me sort it all out in the near future.

previously, i had been copy and pasting all my facebook status / tweets here as a way to archive them, but i don't even know if I can access over a year's worth of them!

umm yeah... started this ol' blog 7 years ago, but it's just easier these days to pop a comment out there on facebook & twitter (when i take the time to do even that!). if you're reading this, you probably already know the details: addison born 10/23/09 @ 5:56am, moved uhaul load 2 of 3 the next day, closed on the sale of the house a week or so later. God timed it all out perfectly.

jake has transitioned to his new school like a champ and lindsay is playing super mom and wife as she always has. church is going good: continuing to build relationships, teaching the Bible well, and developing ways to minister to all ages.

some of this catch up of facebook / twitter posts won't make sense without the context of that day and time, (and anyone reading here has probably already seen them) but here goes:

so, after looking for a new job for all of april and may, i ended up with two by the end of june. due to the uncertainties of the future ahead and being unsure about what lindsay will have to do with her job, i haven't been able to talk about what's been going on the past 2+ months.

on june 14th, i became the pastor of eastside church of the nazarene in covington, ky. it was tough to leave paris church of the nazarene after only seven months of being an associate there, but my calling has always been to be a lead pastor of a church. additionally, the job market in lexington was simply dead and there were a ton more opportunities in the cincinnati metro area.

on june 29th, i started a job as an account manager for a pharmaceutical sales company in cincinnati, oh. just like lexmark, i drive all the way across town. sales is obviously not related to my major, but it's a decent job. combined with my pastoral salary, we're doing fine again. once we sell the house in nicholasville (when and not if!), lindsay hopes to be able to stay home with the kids and not have to go back to work.

lindsay's health insurance for the delivery of the baby is tied to her current job so the hardest part (read: excruciating) of this summer has been living apart from one another. i think both of us have realized how deeply we love and need each other. it will all be over soon, but we're continuously counting down the days.

just happens sometimes ya know. not much to say except that i'm still searching for jobs and staying busy with errands and all. i had a fun opportunity teaching in nashville that now appears to be a door closed. however, this would have required getting a masters of education and i wasn't really thrilled about that. over the past week or two, i had been getting the sense that this wasn't to be. partly because there are some pastor opportunities that i'll be able to talk about soon enough!

2009 sure will be interesting ... !

so, good news first: we are expecting our second child around november 1st!! lindsay is around 7 weeks along and we go to the dr. tomorrow for an ultrasound to hear the heartbeat :-D
L is feeling good (besides being very tired) and has only had a couple bouts of nausea.

bad news second: i got laid off last friday. the guy sitting next to me at work got laid off two months ago and this was basically more of the same. yeah, it stinks, but with unemployment we'll be fine for a little while. in the meantime, it feels like the entire world is in front of us. too many options at the moment (not that any has been officially offered). there's a teaching program in nashville and a similar set up in ky. there's the same ol' engineering and tech jobs all over the place (though not very many). there are a few churches all over the country. you get the picture. priority #1 is supporting our family. but i don't feel that will be at the expense of my pastoral calling. the Lord will work it all out, but for right now i'm clueless about the road ahead.

interesting news third: ok, honestly, i did _not_ do this 'eating on a dollar per day' thing as a diet or to save money. however, obviously, both happened. i started roughly 6 weeks ago with a $41 trip to aldi's and i've spent maybe $15-20 since. my portion of the grocery budget over that time is probably $200 and that doesn't count going out to eat. so, roughly $150 saved?
i finally hooked up wii fit this week and i've lost over 20 pounds during lent (our scale hadn't been working so i've been clueless). holy cow! i'm a few pounds lighter than our wedding day (roughly the lowest i've been during marriage). yes, i've been taking vitamins and eating healthily - just smaller portions. i'm excited to start exercising more as i intake more after easter.

the journey is trudging along, but it is worth it. i had a calculated portion of spaghetti last night that was less than half of what i normally get - and it was a bit too much! part of this experience has been learning that we simply don't need as much of what we consume (food, materially, etc.). i've found some cheap chicken breasts and they are making for some meals that are better. i haven't had a salad in about a week (need to change that ...), i haven't had much tuna yet (one meal), i need to make another batch of refried beans, and the list goes on. in other words, i still have some options left to spice things up!

it only took two weeks for the craving to start ...

on the drive home from picking up jake in the afternoon, i'm usually starting to get hungry. regular oatmeal or peanut butter on toast and then a sandwich at lunch only end up going so far. i pass a papa john's (of which L partook last week) and the coffee shop and long for a splurge. i think it's less the specific food and more feeling handcuffed by not being able to eat whatever i want, when i want. it's similar to feeling like a spoiled kid not getting what he or she wants.

for people of means (like everyone reading this i presume), eating is very much a social activity. something to do. shopping is often the same way. "oh saturday is so boring. let's go to the mall or out to eat." spending becomes our activity.

holy saturday is one month from today. wow.

and now a non-backdated update post.

yeah, so the last five entries were all backdated to catch things up and not miss some important events in life. this past week has been fun and i must say that lent hasn't been that tough so far. i guess i just prepared a lot (numbers are fun) and focus on eating cost efficiently.

each day i either have plain oatmeal with 1 tbsp of maple syrup (6-7 cents) or a piece of toast with 1 tbsp of peanut butter (8 cents). most days i have a half or whole banana for a snack around 10 am (when i normally eat almonds), but that costs 8.3 or 16.6 cents respectively and really cuts into the dinner fund. lunch is usually a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (1 tbsp of each) for 14.2 cents or the occasional bologna sandwich for roughly the same cost.

on the days i have a half banana for a snack, that leaves me a whopping 70 cents for dinner which ends up being a ton. on the first few days i had a huge salad (lettuce, cucumber, carrots, tomatoes, onion, salt and pepper, 2 tbsp dressing), but it was just a bit much. so lately i usually have a salad half that size - just lettuce, cucumber, salt and pepper, and 2 tbsp dressing is plenty wet and actually really tasty - and then something else. this week that has often been a serving of refried beans and/or rice sometimes with tortillas.

a few special meals: looking for something different and interesting on thursday night, i had a bologna sandwich with a scrambled egg on it. and it was sooo good. friday night, i went as light as possible during the day and for dinner i had a half a box of penne pasta, a 1/2 cup of meat spaghetti sauce, and a bunch of spices. very tasty except it was actually a bit much. i should have stuck with a 1/4 box of pasta and then had a small salad. finally, this morning i conjured up a small version of juevos rancheros (one of my faves at mexican places): one egg, 2 corn tortillas (that i unsuccessfully tried to fry up a little bit in some butter), and the last of my refried beans.

who knows what 65 cents will bring tonight for dinner, but it's a fun adventure.

oh, and i figured out what to do on sundays. normally lent is the 40 days between ash wednesday and easter sunday, not including sundays. thurs, you usually break your fast on sundays, but that seems odd for me to indulge myself gratuitously on sundays - even though it's supposed to be a 'mini-easter.' my plan is to keep on the fast for all meals except sunday lunch and then remain frugal for that one meal. last weekend, lindsay made more homemade barbecue and we bought a rotisserie chicken so i had a good portion of meat and some potatoes and onions for sunday lunch.

and man they're cheap! and very tasty! i used a recipe from emeril and limited the amount of ingredients to just what was necessary (beans, garlic, spices). i priced everything out and the entire batch only came to $0.63 for what started as a base of 2 cups of beans. should be an interesting week of some burritos (i have some cheap corn tortillas, but they fall apart easy) and who knows what!
